National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT)

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards developed a voluntary assessment program that certifies educators who meet rigorous professional standards.

These standards define what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.

Today, more than 750 Pennsylvania teachers -- and 91,000 teachers nationwide -- are National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs).

National Board Certification is generously supported by federal, state, corporate, and foundation funds. Research (insert link to research highlights card) supports that quality teaching is the key to improved student achievement.

This is one reason why the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has structured our Center for Teaching Excellence at East Stroudsburg University to encourage National Board Certification.

As leaders in their schools, NBCTs are in a unique position to transform teaching and learning.

We invite you to discover how you can become, or support, a National Board Certified Teacher.

ESU Center for Teaching Excellence

If you are interested in becoming a NBCT and meet the eligibility criteria, we can assist you financially through offsets of the $2500 fees and provide academic and mentoring support through our NBCT cohort classes. Participating teachers are eligible for ACT48 credits.

They can also earn 6 graduate credits from ESU and extra credits for certification (ACT).

Qualifying teachers only need to pay for the $65 application fee.

The process takes approximately one year to complete. Assistance is also available with renewal candidates.

Our Center for Teaching Excellence also provides support to schools and districts interested in sponsoring participation as part of their professional development program.
