Diversity Equity and Inclusion in Education Certificate & M.Ed. Track

The ESU Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Education can be a stand alone ESU certificate for educators, and/or part of an M.Ed. in Professional & Secondary education. The courses assists practicing educators to investigate, design, and implement culturally empowered learning environments through courses aligned to Pennsylvania's Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Education Competencies.

How will I get to know PA's Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Educational Competencies?

In the course PSED 535 Classroom Diversity, time is spent on the Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Educational Competencies so you confidently use them to guide your learning environment. Then, in the 3 other courses you have time to linger on specific compentencies and go deeper.

Will it help me meet my students learning needs?

Yes, you will work with your colleagues and professors to create inclusive learning environments to help students feel valued, safe, and supported, regardless of their backgrounds. Below are some ways you will do that:

  • Implement culturally responsive teaching using culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogies to engage students and reflect their diverse cultural experiences.
  • Address and reduce bias in the classroom by identify implicit bias in instructional practices, assessments, and interactions with students, while actively working to create equitable learning experiences.
  • Support historically marginalized student populations (e.g., students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities) by understanding their unique challenges.
  • Select and create teaching materials that reflect the diversity of student experiences and histories, challenging the dominance of one perspective.
  • Establish classroom norms and behavior management strategies that promote equity, justice, and fairness, reducing disparities in disciplinary actions.
  • Build relationships with families and communities from different cultural backgrounds in meaningful and respectful ways, fostering collaboration in students’ learning.
I'm worried about how I will this with everything I do!

Educators carry awesome responsibilities when caring for students. The work is so rewarding, but it can also be stressful. The ESU professors support awareness of your wellness and reflective practice for growth.

Can I add this to my M.Ed?

YES, if you are earning an M.Ed. in Professional & Secondary Education, the DEI in Education courses are an optional track. You will take other core courses, the 4 courses here and another approved by your advisor. Please meet with you advisor to create your Plan of Study. If you are unsure of your advisor, please contact the chair or graduate coordinator.
