BIG RESEARCH CAN COME FROM SMALL PLACES

Relative to our size, a lot of exciting research is taking place.

There are a large number of projects and investigations taking place on campus at any time. Over 200 students are annually active in research on campus taking advantage of opportunities and undertaking research with our highly skilled faculty.

Our Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute is one of the BIGGEST of its kind in the United States and the only one in Pennsylvania.

Clear Path II, a National Science Foundation S-STEM award, is the BIGGEST award at $5M supporting students in STEM fields and researching the environments that help with student success.

Student Undergraduate Research Experience (S.U.R.E)

Oliver Paszkowski, a junior majoring in Chemistry and BioChemistry, was awarded a S.U.R.E. summer grant to undertake a project titled "Towards the Discovery of Potential anti-tuberculosis Agents", working together with Dr. Rene Fuanta (Chemistry and BioChemistry).

The overall goal of this research project is to produce and characterize Mycobacterium tuberculosis shikimate kinase (MtSK) and screen for novel anti-tubercular agents. The significance of this research can be understood when considering the universal rise in
tuberculosis rates across the world.

Oliver's responsibility to keep a detailed laboratory notebook of all performed experiments and results obtained, to prepare his reagents – buffers, sterile water, broth, inhibitor dilutions, and keep up to date with related literature on the project.
Student Undergraduate Research Experience (S.U.R.E)

Bara Meqdadi, a junior in Finance, will investigate "Investment Pattern Identification" working together with Dr. Daisy Wang (Business Management) during his summer undergraduate research experience (S.U.R.E.).

Bara will undertake analysis that involves studying the underlying economic and financial factors that affect the value of a security, such as a stock or bond. He will identify patterns and to find the correlations between financial and technical analyses, eventually developing algorithms for investments.
Summer Graduate Student Researcher (GSR)

Maria Francois, a doctoral student in the Ed.D Program, is working collaboratively with Dr. Liz Azukas (Professional and Secondary Education) to contribute to a project researching telepresence experiences of both faculty and students.

Robotic telepresence has not been widely implemented in higher education due to negative attitudes of professors, high costs, and infrastructure challenges. Since the pandemic, attitudes toward the use of robotic telepresence have shifted, with their being a greater openness to the use of robotic telepresence. Benefits have
been associated with the use of telepresence but more research needs to be done to study the telepresence experiences of both faculty and students.

Her activity includes completing a literature review, coding data, completing the data analysis, assisting with conclusions.
