Students who enter the Exercise Science major begin their studies by taking the Exercise Science core classes.
As juniors and seniors, Exercise Science students choose a set of co-requisite courses to focus their studies in one of three concentrations:
- Exercise Physiology Concentration - This concentration prepares that student for advanced study
- Exercise Professional Concentration - This concentration prepares the student for work in the fitness professions
- Therapeutic Science Concentration - This concentration prepare students to be competitive candidates for professional study in DPT, OT and PA.
Opportunities to gain experience in a work environment exist through the internships offered as part of the major in Exercise Science while students are encouraged to participate in campus organizations emphasizing practical experience.
Certification opportunities are also available from nationally recognized organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Heart Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association
The American College of Sports Medicine endorses the Exercise Professional program at ESU as matching the goals of the Health/Fitness Instructor level of certification.
The National Strength and Conditioning Association recognizes the Exercise Science program at ESU as matching the needs for professionals interested in Strength and Conditioning.
Exercise science faculty members hold doctoral degrees in exercise-related fields of study and hold advanced certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and/or the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
Each year, all faculty attend both regional and national conferences to present research, network and collaborate with colleagues from other institutions, and attend meetings discussing current findings and recommendations in the field of exercise science.
Our faculty also publish original research in peer-reviewed journals, chair university wide committees, and are active leaders in the community.
