The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics is a rigorous introduction to the discipline of mathematics.

Students work together on their mathematical modeling project.

Students in this program will be exposed to both applied and theoretical mathematical ideas.

This program prepares students to enter graduate school for further study or to seek employment in fields that value people with well-honed quantitative and problem-solving skills.

Mathematics Major

Choosing East Stroudsburg University’s Mathematics program has been one of the best decisions that I have made as an undergraduate. The ability to choose from a number of concentrations allowed me to hone my focus and choose the path that was best for me as I began to experience some of the many applications of mathematics.

I was originally drawn to ESU because of the Secondary Education concentration that their mathematics program offered. I met some outstanding math education professors along the way but ultimately decided to pursue a degree with a focus on statistics and the transition was seamless because of how much flexibility the program offers. The way that the Mathematics program at ESU is structured allows for you to choose classes that align with your interests and really allow for an individualized curriculum. I only wish that I had known how many interesting courses that ESU had to offer before I completed my general education and elective courses elsewhere!

After choosing the courses that suit you the best, you can be rest assured that your learning will go just as smoothly as the advising process. East Stroudsburg boasts some of the most knowledgeable and caring professors (my words, not theirs) that I have seen in my undergraduate career. The attention to detail and the drive to ensure that all students have the tools they need to be excellent mathematicians was something that I will never forget. The way that the professors were able to take an approach to mathematics that felt professional and personal at the same time was amazing to see and makes me wish I was able to take every single math course that the department had to offer. Some of my favorite moments at ESU were the academic dialogues that I was able to have with my professors. I loved asking questions no matter how big or small because I knew that the faculty would give thoughtful and intelligent responses even if it wasn’t immediate. My favorite moment, however, had to be the service-learning project that I was a part of during the Introduction to Mathematical Modeling course. Getting a glimpse into what the world of applied mathematics looked like though a hands-on project with the community and my fellow math majors was both an invaluable and exciting experience.Building upon my love of the academic side of my experience of ESU, I decided to join the Math club known as Euclid’s Elements. Having a fun break in the action to enjoy some time with the like-minded math enthusiasts was a breath of fresh air. Discussing all of the interesting math topics and playing cool games that you wouldn’t normally see inside of a classroom was another great experience. This along with trips to various math conferences and the Museum of Math made the decision to join Euclid’s Elements a worthwhile one.Not only was my time at ESU a memorable and enjoyable one, but it was also one that prepared me well for my future endeavors. Along with the mathematical background that ESU has given me, they have also helped me to see some of the potential options that I have after graduation. Actuarial Science is a field that I heard with increasing frequency as I progressed through my undergraduate career but I never thought I would be able to pursue it because of how difficult the exams are, which are required to enter the field. Despite my doubts, the knowledge that I’ve acquired from ESU allowed me to pass Actuarial Exam P which is known for being the more difficult of the two preliminary exams, and I am on my way to a career as an actuary. But that is not all, ESU has also opened my eyes to future opportunities in education. My plan had always been to obtain a bachelor’s degree which led me to a career that I would be in for the rest of my life, but that has changed. The passion for mathematics that I have seen in many of my professors had left me inspired to learned more advanced mathematics and their applications. This inspiration and my professors helped me to see that a further role in academia would be good for me, and I was accepted into a Master’s program in Data Science at Eastern University which I will be attending in the fall. I would never have seen graduate work as something I was capable of without the support of my professors in the math department and I am extremely grateful for that.All of my experiences at ESU cultivated a close sense of community; one where it felt like family. Seeing professors and other math majors in the math department felt like seeing family members which is not something I can say about any other school or university that I have been to. My time as math major at ESU was more than earning a degree, it was making lasting friendships and connections that I will remember well into the future along with the knowledge and expertise needed to be successful in the field of mathematics. That being said, you should look forward to some of the amazing experiences that lie ahead.

Student Organizations

Students play the game Tantrix at a math club meeting.

The Math Club meets monthly during the semester to play games with underlying math content, talk about mathematical topics, and eat pizza. They take a field trip to the Museum of Math in New York City in the spring.

Honor Society

Sigma Xi - The Scientific Honor Society The 2019 Sigma Xi math major awardees and some of the math faculty.

Sigma Xi, the scientific honor society, holds several events for the science community each year. Chillifest in the fall gathers scientists around homemade chili while Dessertfest with Trivia allows the community to sample homemade baked goods while being challenged by scientific trivia. Each spring, the math department honors several graduating seniors at the Sigma Xi award banquet. Students proudly display their award certificates and list the honor on their resumes.

Hands-on Learning

The aquaponics demonstration project in the EcoZone at the Pocono Environmental Education Center.

All math majors participate in a service-learning project and many BA math majors take advantage of the opportunity to work one-on-one with a professor on a topic of their choice.

In Spring 2019, the math modeling students explored the economic viability of aquaponics farming for the Pocono Environmental Education Center. They worked together to learn about the types of crops and fish that could be successfully grown and marketed using aquaponics. They developed an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the cost/revenue and profit/loss of particular systems.
All freshman math students take MATH 150 Mathematical Investigations which provides exposure to college-level mathematics beyond calculus. It includes many opportunities for students to work together on hands-on projects. There is a data visualization based service-learning project in the course.

In recent years students have worked one-on-one with professors on combinatorics, abstract algebra II, topology, real analysis, and complex analysis.
