Contemporary plays are analyzed in theory classes and used as source material in applied classes.
Generally, at least one show per year is selected from the contemporary theatre to challenge students with relevant topics and postmodern and other innovative writing and performance styles.
The recent topics include: homelessness, nuclear war and peace, childhood cancer, evolution, racism and political correctness.
The department also offers new play workshops and playwriting/adapting projects as components for applied projects in some classes.
Students may also submit original work for the Stage II's One Act Festival.
