Welcome prospective ESU student! We're happy to see that you have an interest in attending the University. For many LGBTQ and feminist-identified folks, there can be some hesitance in looking at different institutions and how they may connect and engage on campus. Here's some important information and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Dr. Gene Kelly at ekelly2@esu.edu

Non-Discrimination and Partner Benefits

ESU is proud to include both sexual orientation and gender identity in our non-discrimination policy. Read the full policy. We also extend benefit options to same-sex couples.

Academic Programs

There are many courses throughout different academic departments that focus on gender and/or sexuality. Some courses include: Psychology of Women, Sociology of Sexuality, Human Sexuality and Reproductive Health, Human Rights and Freedoms, Women in Literature, Psychology of Human Sexuality, and Sociology of Women. We also have a minor in Women's and Gender Studies. If you have questions about the minor program, email Dr. Andi McLanahan, Professor of Communication.

Trans* Inclusivity

Preferred Name Policy: East Stroudsburg University permits students to use a preferred name in the course of University business and education. This would mean that a Preferred Name would appear on class rosters, residence hall rosters, and other documents. However, there are instances when the legal name must be used including employment (W-2) paperwork and financial aid, for example. For full details please review the Preferred Name Policy.

*Please note, once the preferred name is reflected in your MyESU Portal, you will still need to visit the Campus Card Center (lower level, University Center) to have a new eCard printed with your preferred name. You will also need to email helpdesk@esu.edu to request your email address be changed to reflect your preferred name.

Gender Inclusive Housing: Residence Life and Housing permits students to choose their roommates, regardless of biological sex, in Hemlock and Hawthorn Suites. It is also offered in the University Apartments, and University Ridge for sophomore level students, and above. The apartment, for example, could be selected as three females, three males, two females and a male, or two males and a female. Double rooms (shared bedrooms) will remain single gender.

Please contact the Residence Life and Housing Office for more information at (570) 422-3460.

Social Life and Programs

ESU has many student organizations that sponsor numerous programs across campus. PRIDE is the main recognized LGBTQ student organization. Feminist Alliance is the main feminist progressive collective. Annual programs include the Homecoming Drag Show, Sexy Drag Bingo, trips to Philadelphia and New York City, and connections and collaborations with area colleges and universities. In addition, both Student Activity Association and the Campus Activities Board sponsors trips away from campus, on-campus comedians and performers, service and volunteer trips, and leadership development offerings. We also boast Stony Acres, an off-campus retreat center with a ropes course and other adventure style programs.
