Reasonable Accommodations

“Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments to the tasks, environment or to the way things are usually done that enable individuals with disabilities to have an equal opportunity to participate in an academic program or a job (U.S. Department of Education, 2007)."

Students Requesting Accommodations

The Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) stipulates that postsecondary institutions are responsible for providing necessary accommodations when a student discloses a disability. This can be initiated by completing an Accommodation Request Form either on-line or in print format. Disability specialists then make a determination based on documented need, previous accommodations and functional limitations.

Student Accommodation Request Process Overview

  1. Students request accommodations using the Accommodation Request Form
  2. Documentation is reviewed by a disability specialist
  3. An intake interview is scheduled by OASIS
  4. Accommodation letters are generated and available to students to present to faculty members.

Submitting Accommodation Request Forms and Documentation

Accommodation requests and documentation may be submitted in the following methods:

  1. Online applications may submit documentation by uploading documents to the online form, email, fax or US mail. The Accommodation Request Form along with documentation may be uploaded or sent by fax, email or US mail)

Academic Accommodations & Auxiliary Services

OASIS assists students in gaining equal access to academic programs and activities. Academic accommodations and auxiliary services include, but are not limited, to testing accommodations, environmental accommodations, note-taking support services, alternate format materials and use of assistive and adaptive technology.

Housing Accommodations

Students that request air-conditioning and other housing accommodations may request accommodations either on-line or in printed format, and accompanied by documentation from a licensed medical professional. Housing accommodations must be requested and approved prior to Residence Life deadlines and are dependent on availability.

Temporary Accommodations

Temporary accommodations are determined on a case by case basis for individuals with temporary conditions that are a result of injuries, surgery or short term medical conditions that need access to educational resources. Students are recommended to submit documentation indicating the type of disability, severity, limitations, prognosis and estimated duration of the condition. Temporary accommodations may be requested by completing an Accommodation Request Form either in on-line or in printed format.

Accommodations that are not Provided

Postsecondary schools including colleges and universities do not provide personal attendants, individually prescribed devices, readers for personal use or study, or other devices or services of a personal nature, such as tutoring and typing.

Employees and Visitors Requesting Accommodations

Sign language Interpreting and Captioning requests may be done so by completing the Sign Language Interpreter and Captioning Request on-line or in printed format.

Employees

Accommodation Requests may be applied through the department of Human Resources by utilizing the ADA Accommodation Form.

Visitors

Accommodation requests for a particular event may be obtained by contacting the department and/or the event coordinator prior to the event.
