Every ten years each accredited college or university in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, prepares a self-study document and hosts a team visit for an evaluation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Middle States). Middle States is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to conduct accreditation for institutions of higher education. Accreditation is a necessary peer review process that allows a campus to engage in self-reflection on how well it is fulfilling its mission and goals.
It all begins with the vital self-study for Middle States. It is a two-and-a-half year process that started at ESU in Fall 2014 when more than eighty colleagues from various departments across campus volunteering for membership of the steering committee and various workgroups were identified. The steering committee and workgroups worked diligently to complete a draft of ESU’s self-study that covered the fourteen Middle States Standards that our institution must be able to address for reaccreditation.
The self-study was discussed by all of the campus community throughout Fall 2016 and early Spring 2017. Based on campus input, the self-study was revised and finalized. The self-study was sent on February 16, 2017 to Middle States and the team that visited ESU from April 9-12, 2017. After the team visit, a team report was completed and sent to the Middle States Commission. The Commission reviewed all materials and sent an official letter to ESU informing us of the outcome.
Please know that every individual within our campus community plays a critical role in fulfilling the mission and goals of ESU. It is equally as critical that everyone know about Middle States and continue to participate in our efforts for continuous quality improvement.
We invite all members of the ESU community to view the final self-study addressing all fourteen Middle States Standards. The narrative (ninety-seven page document), the full self-study, the final team report, and other documents are available below.
