Edcamp of the Poconos
Edcamp is like no other professional development you've attended!
Edcamp of Poconos 2021 took place on August 11, 2021, in the Warren E. and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. Even though we had a quick change in venue, we were thrilled to welcome local educators to our first in-person professional development. We cannot wait to host our fourth Edcamp on August 10, 2022. Registration for the event is not required but highly encouraged for planning.
What is Edcamp? Edcamp allows educators to design and attend sessions of their choice depending on their needs. At the start of the day, participants design desired sessions. Participants share their areas of expertise or attend sessions they want to learn more about. If you have a skill, you can spontaneously lead a session. If you want to learn, you can join a session that looks interesting. The idea is for you to walk away with information you can use in your classroom with your students the next day while also creating a strong professional network with other local educators.

- What does it cost?

Nothing! It is absolutely FREE! A light breakfast and boxed lunch will be provided.
- Where should I park?

Please park in the lots behind SciTech or Dansbury Commons.
- What is the format?

Edcamps are “unconference” events with a focus on education and learning. Much like a teacher-centered classroom, most professional learning is done where participants listen to one person who shares their presentation with the audience. Edcamps on the other hand are more like a student-centered classroom, meant to encourage conversation and participation among the attendees. Participants determine the topics for the day and take an active role in setting the direction of the conference. While the day typically begins with breakfast and construction of the day's session board, this year's virtual event has predetermined sessions that were chosen based on community input during the planning.
- Do I have to speak or present?

No! While we encourage you to share ideas, you may just sit back and take everything in. If you do decide to present, it does not mean that you have to prepare for hours. In fact, Edcamps run better without a preplanned presentation. Do you consider yourself well-versed on a topic? Why not share with others? We all learn better when we share with others.
- What does a session look like?

This could vary depending on how many are in the session and the nature of the dialogue. Typically, the sessions are very free-flowing and allow for a variety of voices to be heard.
- What do I bring?

Yourself, a fully-charged device, something to write with, and a willingness to share and learn alongside your peers.
- Do I need a "tech" background to participate?

While Edcamps have been made extremely popular through Twitter and blogs, this doesn't mean that you have to be a "techie" to attend an Edcamp. Edcamps are for anyone that wants to spend their day thinking about, talking about, and learning about how to improve their educational practice.
