About the Department

Modern Languages offers a baccalaureate degree program in Spanish, as a BA and a BS.

In addition, minors are offered in Spanish, Spanish for the Professions, and in Chinese Language & Culture.

French, German and Latin are offered on a selective basis. In addition, individualized instruction in the Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs), including Arabic, Japanese, Turkish, etc., can be arranged.

Occasionally, ESU students may take advantage of shared courses from other State System universities via videoconferencing.

Our Focus

The primary focus of our major and minor programs is to teach students to communicate effectively in the target language, while allowing them to gain intercultural competencies that serve their professional and personal goals.

Emphasis is placed on situating language study within a larger cultural and historical context.

Our Programs

Our programs are designed to prepare students for careers in:

  • Modern language education
  • International business and finance
  • International studies
  • Translation services
  • Relevant positions in the health and medical professions

The B.A. major in Spanish offers excellent preparation for graduate studies in a wide range of fields, including:

  • Modern languages
  • Comparative literature's and cultures
  • International relations
  • Diplomatic studies
  • Law school

Second Major for Marketability

Increasingly, ESU students choose a Spanish major to complement another area of study, such as Business, Health, Nursing, Education and Hospitality.

These second/dual majors are typically seen by employers as a competitive edge in the hiring process. Career prospects for modern language majors, in the liberal arts and teaching, are very strong and continue to expand.

Accredited Programs

The B.A. major in Spanish offers K-12 teaching certification through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Our teaching certification program in Spanish is accredited by PDE and by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

We have been granted CAEP's highest level of accreditation, National Recognition.
