The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides high quality programs in both traditional and emerging fields of study which recognize and promote human and intellectual diversity.
Thus, the department provides options for students whose interests may range from traditional chemistry fields which are either on the interface between chemistry and biology or that have a health–profession emphasis. Majors are well prepared for direct entry to the workforce or graduate or professional study.
The following undergraduate academic degree programs are offered: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with concentrations in General Chemistry, ACS Certified, and Chemical Forensics; Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education/Chemistry; Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry; Bachelor of Science in Chemical Biotechnology.
A Minor in Chemistry program allows students to receive recognition for completing a chemistry program short of a double major.
Undergraduate Programs
The Bachelor of Science Program in Chemistry is approved by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is one of only seven departments within the State System of Higher Education to have achieved and maintained this prestigious certification.
The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). The ASBMB accreditation has been achieved by only two programs within the State System of Higher Education.
ESU is located near several chemical and pharmaceutical companies such as Sanofi Pasteur, Royal Chemicals, Biospectra, and DSM. Majors can explore internships and employment in their area of study.
Student Organization
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Club provides an interactive environment for students of any major to participate in chemistry activities.
We are greatly involved with ESU events and the local community; we invite guest speakers to campus, and take part in fun educational field trips.
Internships
ESU is located within one of the biotech hotbeds in the U.S. and is well positioned geographically in a cluster of pharmaceutical companies known as "Pharm Country."- Undergraduate research programs, under the supervision of a faculty mentor, allow students to learn independently and solve problems and expose students to advanced, specialized areas of chemistry and biochemistry.
- Chemistry students have numerous internship opportunities at regional chemical and pharmaceutical companies such as Agrofresh, Lehigh Valley Health Network - Pocono, Sanofi Pasteur, BioSpectra, Minerals Technologies, Instrument Specialties, Kolmar Labs, Royal Chemicals, Vigon International, and McNeil Labs.
