Chemical biotechnology brings together principles of chemistry and biology to investigate molecular interactions, biochemical processes, biomolecules, and biological systems. Graduates of the 120-credit program gain hands-on experience and expertise in organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, biotechnology, and biochemical methods, preparing them for advanced studies or careers in research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, laboratory science, and related fields.

Concentrations

The General concentration provides a broad and flexible foundation in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. Students can explore areas such as analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, microbiology, genetics, immunology, and cell culture, preparing them for careers in research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, laboratory science, and related fields, or for advanced study.

The Pre-Pharmacy concentration is designed for students planning to pursue pharmacy school. Along with the core chemical biotechnology curriculum, students can select coursework in areas such as microbiology, genetics, anatomy, histology, and cell culture. Students work with an advisor to develop a curriculum plan aligned with the requirements of their intended pharmacy programs.

The foundations of chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics are integrated throughout the chemical biotechnology curriculum. Students study the structure and reactions of molecules, biochemical processes, molecular biology, biotechnology, and the structure and function of biomolecules. The curriculum emphasizes laboratory techniques, analytical methods, experimentation, data analysis, and scientific problem solving, providing a comprehensive foundation in the chemical and biological sciences.
