Enrollment

Following the enrollment disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has demonstrated measurable progress toward stabilization and sustainable growth, consistent with institutional strategic priorities. Total enrollment increased from 5,136 students in Fall 2021 to 5,884 in Fall 2025, representing a 14.5 percent increase over the five years.

This growth has been driven primarily by sustained increases in undergraduate enrollment, which rose from 4,327 in Fall 2021 to 5,130 in Fall 2025, reflecting the effectiveness of recruitment, retention, and student success initiatives outlined in the ESU Strategic Plan. Graduate enrollment remained relatively stable during this period, supporting program continuity while positioning the institution for future graduate expansion.

Overall, these enrollment trends demonstrate institutional resilience, effective planning, and alignment with accreditation expectations for fiscal responsibility, enrollment management, and long-term sustainability.

General Education

ESU has identified and adopted seven general education learning outcomes necessitating reconfiguration of the general education program. The new general education program is a set of interrelated courses that provide experiences that may not otherwise be provided in a student's major degree program. This program is designed to improve competencies, broaden perspectives, and educate incoming degree-seeking students to become informed individuals, deliberate decision makers, and contributing citizens of a global society. The program consists of a 45-credit core, which includes a 36-credit "breadth" sequence and 9 additional credits in English composition, first year experience, and a health and wellness course.
