Brian Hodge is the Director of Bands for ESU, coordinating and administrating numerous performance organizations on campus. In addition, he teaches courses in music theory, writes and arranges music for ensembles across the United States, and is an active performer in brass and piano.

Teaching Interest

My teaching interests are in providing a well balanced, artistically relevant, and community engaging music program to student participants. In addition, I believe engaging with music is the most effective method for learning music, and incorporate practical performance instruction into each class.

Research Interest

My primary research interest is in the intersection of biomechanics and music. I am interested in developing new methods which may improve the ergonomic practices of musicians, particularly those engaged in athletic bands.

Creatively, I enjoy crafting arrangements and transcriptions which are performed by professional and student groups nationally, as well as composing drill/program designs for athletic bands.

Service

In my role as director, I have sought to expand the ways our music programs may better the community. We are focusing on engaging both the academic and greater regional community to promote ESU across the region and serve as a recruitment vehicle for the school by performing at numerous open houses and band contest exhibitions throughout Eastern Pennsylvania. I also serve on the PA Intercollegiate Band Selection Committee, and am an active member of College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, and Pennsylvania Music Educators Association.

Student Group Advising

I am the advisor for the Mu Epsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity.
