Policy Statement

Members of the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania community who wish to work with live vertebrate animals in their research, training, and teaching must have an approved Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol prior to commencing animal use.

Reason for Policy

To ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and other applicable laws and standards concerning the humane care and use of animals in research, training, and teaching.

Definitions

IACUC - Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

Vertebrate animals - animals having a bony or cartilaginous skeleton with a segmented spinal column and a large brain enclosed in a skull or cranium, which includes fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Approved protocol - a proposal for animal care or use that has been submitted to the IACUC on the appropriate form and been approved by the committee.
