The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (no concentration or general concentration) is designed for students diving deeply into mathematics.
Do you want to focus on learning mathematics? Are you interested in graduate school in mathematics or a related discipline like statistics, operations research or data science? Do you want to concentrate on problem solving generally? The B.S. in Mathematics was designed for you.
You will have the opportunity to take courses in both applied and theoretical mathematics. When you take a course you love, you will have the opportunity to explore that topic more deeply through independent study with a faculty member or through research opportunities.
Immerse yourself in mathematics with the B.S. in mathematics.
Why ESU?
- Service-learning projects allow students to work with a community partner on a math-related project as part of their regular coursework. Every math major will participate in at least one service-learning project.
- Lots of free electives to add a minor or explore your favorite area of mathematics.
- Customizable for graduate school preparation.
- Preparation for a variety of math-related careers.
What You'll Learn
Throughout coursework and non-classroom activities, students learn how to:
- Solve multistep problems
- Develop logical arguments and proofs
- Think clearly and thoroughly
- Write logically, clearly, and concisely
Career Opportunities
The B.S. in Mathematics is a new degree modeled on the B.A. in Mathematics. Students who completed the B.A. in mathematics students have pursued a variety of career and continuing education opportunities including:
- Data Analyst, Veracity Forecasting Group
- Graduate Student M.S. in Data Science at Eastern University
- Lead Data Scientist, Charter Communications
- Data Scientist, Valen Analytics
- Statistical Programmer I, INC Research
- Statistical Programmer, Chiltern
- Graduate Student, M.A. in Mathematics, Villanova University
- Graduate Student, Ph.D. in Mathematics, Florida State University
Student Organizations and Honor Society
The Math Club meets monthly during the semester to play games with underlying math content, talk about mathematical topics, and eat pizza. They take a field trip to the Museum of Math in New York City in the spring.
Sigma Xi, the scientific honor society, holds several events for the science community each year. Chilifest in the fall gathers scientists around homemade chili while Dessertfest with Trivia allows the community to sample homemade baked goods while being challenged by scientific trivia. Each spring, the math department honors several graduating seniors at the Sigma Xi award banquet. Students proudly display their award certificates and list the honor on their resumes.
