Program Objectives
- To provide students with a vehicle within an intellectual environment that fosters their knowledge in the areas of Exercise Science.
- To ensure that Exercise Science graduates will have developed knowledge and skills essential for entry-level exercise science professionals or a continuation to graduate level education.
- To prepare undergraduate Exercise Science students for advanced professional certifications/licenses from professional organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and/or the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Concentration
This lab-based concentration with two internship experiences prepares you for professional programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and chiropractic studies. You’ll have multiple clinical experiences to gain significant patient contact hours to fulfill admissions requirements for competitive programs across the region.
This lab-based concentration prepares you for diverse areas of research including pharmaceutical, apparel, footwear, medical device, and human performance indicators. Graduates go on to careers in corporate wellness or pursue advanced degrees in clinical exercise physiology. Experiential learning is embedded in the curriculum with early internship opportunities sophomore year in preparation for independent work, research and applied laboratories.
This internship-based concentration prepares you for careers in sports performance, health and wellness, commercial fitness and strength and conditioning (collegiate and professional teams). It provides significant hands-on experiences above and beyond the internship requirements.
Exceptional Placement Rates
ESU also has exceptional placement rates in professional programs and prepares students
for further study in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant,
and chiropractic studies. Additional options, such as an accelerated 3-year track
or direct admission to one of ESU’s accelerated graduate programs, make this program
flexible and career-focused

More Than Just a Club
Not only will you be meeting new people, making new friends, and networking with your peers, you’ll be gaining valuable experience for your future in the field. The Exercise Science Club engages in numerous professionally enhancing experiences, including administering the EXSC 5K, attending the Mid-Atlantic Regional ACSM Conference, and hosting a guest speaker series.
Careers Opportunities
Students must complete a professional internship as part of their program of study. ESU has over 230 approved internship sites nationwide in the areas of sports performance, collegiate athletics, physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical exercise physiology, research, medical devices, and wellness.
Students who choose to complete independent research in place of an Internship will work directly with faculty in one of our five specialized labs to develop a research question, review literature, collect data and analyze results. Findings are published in peer-reviewed literature or presented at the annual regional professional conference.
