College is a period of transition, not only for your student, but for parents and other family members.

During this time of change your student will continue to need your support. Parents can help by trusting and encouraging their independence. Accept that you won't know every detail of your student's life.

Your student is in an environment where faculty and staff understand the developmental process and transitional issues college students face. There are a number of resources available to your student to aid in their adjustment to life at ESU. In order to utilize these supports, your student must take the initiative.

Encourage your student to take advantage of the services CAPS provides. However, making the appointment should be their responsibility.

Identifying when your student has a problem

  • They feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of sadness and helplessness.
  • Their emotional difficulties make it hard for them to function day to day. Examples may include missing classes, not turning in assignments, trouble getting out of bed, neglecting daily hygiene.
  • Their actions are harmful to themselves or others.
  • They are distressed by emotional difficulties facing family members or close friends.
  • They just need someone to talk to.
  • They have received mental health services before and need follow-up.

How CAPS can help

CAPS offers a range of counseling services designed to enhance the educational, vocational, personal, social and emotional well-being of students at ESU. The professional staff at CAPS can help students gain the self-knowledge and skills they need to get the most out of life and their experience at the university.

At CAPS, we encourage parents to consult with us regarding concerns they have about their student’s well-being. We offer support to concerned parents by guiding them in the process of getting their student help. It is important, however, that your student make the first appointment themselves.

Limits of confidentiality

All contacts with Counseling and Psychological Services are strictly confidential in accordance with Commonwealth of Pennsylvania privacy laws. Records are not available to individuals or agencies, either on or off campus, without a student's written consent. CAPS records are kept separately from all other University records.
