The College of Business & Management (COBM) in collaboration with the Office of International Programs (OIP) are pleased to announce the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences European Business & Culture Summer School Essay Competition. The Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences European Business & Culture Summer School is scheduled for mid-May - late June 2024, in Bielefeld, Germany. Three winners will receive funding for program costs and roundtrip airfare to Germany (approximately a $3,500 value). Please contact Steve Ives at sives@esu.edu for specific program information or questions

The COBM and OIP Award will bestowed to students who have attained a minimum 3.00 GPA and are pursuing a program of study in the COBM (Business Management, Hospitality, Recreation, & Tourism Management, or Sport Management).

The purpose of the competition is to stimulate and demonstrate the ability of future business leaders to identify/describe important issues and developments in today’s global community. Also, to help them broaden their horizons and develop global citizenship.

We believe that international travel is an opportunity to learn, grow, and experience a new culture. We also know it can be expensive. That’s why we created this study abroad award. We want to remove some barriers and help make studying abroad a possibility for more students.

Being able to communicate well in writing is important in any career in today’s global economy. The essay competition reinforces the COBM’s emphasis on encouraging research and communications skills of students in a business-related field.

Write a concise statement of your proposed program of study and how it will be related to your present academic program. Also describe the personal benefit you expect to receive from the program.

Please address the following points

  1. Please tell us why you are planning to study abroad?
  2. How do college students benefit from a study abroad experience?
  3. What would you like to accomplish (personally and academically) during and after your study abroad experience?
  4. In your opinion, how will the growing number of college students participating in study abroad experiences impact the future of the U.S?
  5. Identify/describe important issues and developments in today’s global community.
