About The Program
The program started in 1977 to help provide East Stroudsburg University (ESU) Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) students an opportunity for hands-on experiences working with individuals with disabilities. Participants with various disabilities, who range in age from five to adult, receive individual instruction focusing on motor skills, socialization, health and skill-related components of physical fitness. Each student in PETE program at ESU is partnered with an individual with a disability. The program gives the students unique opportunities to get to know and interact with individuals with disabilities.

The Swim & Gym program runs on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 PM at ESU's Koehler Fieldhouse. The first hour of the program takes place in the arena with an emphasis on physical and motor fitness and fundamental motor skills stations, individualized work and group games. The remaining time is in the pool area where all participants are introduced to basic swimming skills. This free individualized program follows the regular ESU academic calendar.
Parent Feedback

Tara Dellicker-age 15
"Our daughter, Tara, has attended the ESU Swim & Gym program for 12 years now. She really enjoys coming and especially likes the swimming. We love seeing the smile on her face and the progress she has made. The ESU students are wonderful and we still keep in touch with a few of the students we have met through this great program".

Jonathan Kuschinskas-age 21
"Jonathan has been attending the Swim & Gym program at ESU since he was 3 years old. He enjoys it as much now at the age of 21, as he did when he was 3. He can't wait to get there every Thursday night. He has had several teachers in the school who worked with him at the Swim & Gym program when they were attending ESU. Students have used Jonathan for student project assignments and one time they did a comparison with him and his twin brother on the physical aspects of how they move differently. In the 18 years he has been attending the program, I would say he has only missed a total of 5 sessions, due to illness or other forgivable reasons".

Arnold "Arnie" Goldfuss

When I arrived at ESU in 1977 my teaching responsibilities were in Kinesiology and Adapted P.E. Only a short year earlier, Jeff was diagnosed as having autism. I initially started a Saturday Swim & Gym program, but it didn't last long because most of the college students went home for the weekend. Upon checking my teaching schedule I found that Thursday evenings were free for me and ever since that Fall of 1977, the Thursday night Swim & Gym program has served the recreational needs of several hundred children and adults with disabilities. In the early years there were always a few college students that were nervous about their first interaction. After the initial experience their fears were gone and they were anxious to meet again the following week. Incidentally, I have seen tremendous growth in Jeff as a total person, as a result of the Swim & Gym program and the wonderful students who worked with him over the years. While it's obvious that Jeff has a way to go in his overall competencies he's made great strides relative to where he was a few years ago. I believe physical education is the only curricular area that deals directly with the total person: the physical, cognitive, social and emotional components.
