Public Health (B.S.)
ESU’s Public Health program and its concentrations provide students with an experienced faculty and numerous opportunities for internships and field experience.
Our undergraduate Public Health degree is CEPH accredited and also offers two concentrations (Community Health and Health Services Administration), two minors, six certificate programs, and the Accelerated Pathways program in the BS/MPH.
The Health Studies department also offers an MPH and MS in Health Education to continue higher level education.
- Diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards in the community;
- Inform, educate, and empower people about health issues, mobilize community partnerships and action to identify and solve health problems;
- Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts;
- Enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety;
- Link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable;
- Assure competent public and personal health care workforce; evaluate effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal and population-based health services;
- Research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems.
Concentrations
Community Health
With the health field being the second largest employer in the United States, the Department of Health Studies degree programs provide students with an innovative curriculum to pursue a variety of career paths in the health field, as well as providing the foundation needed for future graduate studies.
Community Health Educators are professionals who design, carry out and evaluate programs that help improve the quality of health within communities. The quality of health attained by communities is what in turn determines the society's overall quality of life.
The Community Health program prepares students for a rewarding service career that improves the health behavior and health outcomes of residents living in local communities, counties, as well as statewide.
The Community Health program also provides a solid foundation for those wishing to pursue graduate training in the public health sciences. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in assessing community needs, planning and implementing community-based health education and health promotion programs; program evaluation; and resource acquisition and development.
Health Services Administration
If you are interested in a rewarding career that allows you to improve the lives of others while working in a rapidly changing field, you should consider a career in health administration.
The Health Department at East Stroudsburg University provides diverse opportunities for students interested in health administration. The curriculum and experiences also provide a solid foundation for students wishing to pursue graduate school training.
At ESU, students receive innovative academic preparation, with an emphasis on public health practice, public administration and management theory and extensive applied experiences within professional settings. The Public Health degree with a concentration in Health Services Administration provides broad exposure to the health sciences, as well as the natural and social sciences.
Upon completion of the degree programs, students are prepared to assess community needs, and design, implement and manage health and medical programs that promote health and prevent disease. The curriculum provides students with the opportunity to network with practicing professionals.
Career Opportunities
Many public health professionals work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, community-based organizations, government agencies and departments, academic, and health organizations. These include, health educator, community health worker, epidemiologist, biostatistician, occupational health and safety specialist, clinical research coordinator, health project manager, executive director, research assistant, hospital administrator, infection control officer, and behavioral health.
Internships and Research Opportunities
Our students have numerous internship opportunities at health-related organizations including hospitals, city, county and state health bureaus and departments, health organizations, nursing home facilities, infections disease environments, as well as some community education environments.
Students can also take a research option for their internship by doing an introduction to research class and working with a professor on an independent study. Students can also do an independent research project and presentation at the Provost’s annual colloquium.
