1. NSF EPSCoR project: Dr. William James Smith, Jr. of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Department of Environmental Studies is the Policy and Outreach Component Lead for an NSF EPSCoR project funded at 15 million dollars over 5 years. He is also participating in the Water Component. The objective is create a statewide interdisciplinary program that stimulates transformative research, education, and outreach on effects of regional climate change on ecosystem resources, and supports use of this knowledge by policy makers. Six capacity-building components will focus on climate modeling, water, policy and outreach, decision-making, ecological change, cyberinfrastructure, and education. This is a multidisciplinary collaboration between UNLV, University of Nevada, Reno, and the Desert Research Institute. He heads a 2.5 million dollar “Component” with 10 faculty members.
