2009 Competition Guidelines - PAPER

Listed below are the guidelines for 2009 and subsequent year awards.  Applicants must follow these submission guidelines:

  1. Papers from students must be submitted by the announced deadline (see #2 below).  Successful competitors will meet ALL criteria listed below.  The competition winners will be announced during the Business Meeting of the Water Resources Specialty Group (WRSG) at the Annual AAG Meeting.
  2. DEADLINE.  The deadline for student paper submission is February 6, 2009.   Papers must be received by this date.
  3. LEVEL OF COMPETITION.  Awards will be given at three levels assuming that submissions are of acceptably high quality: Undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D.  There will be a maximum of three awards of $100 each, one per category.
  4. PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS.  (a) Applicants for the Undergraduate or Masters level awards must present their papers at either an AAG Divisional Meeting or the Annual AAG Meeting.  If the applicant presents at an AAG Divisional Meeting, the paper must be presented BEFORE the date of the Annual AAG Meeting.  Ph.D. applicants must present their paper at the Annual AAG Meeting; (b) The presenter acknowledges that the paper CANNOT be submitted for any other awards from an AAG Specialty Group; (c) Students presenting their paper at the Annual AAG Meeting should notify Charles E. Button (see#12 below) of their assigned session (day/time/number) by email at buttonche@mail.ccsu.edu.
  5. LEVEL AND TIMELINESS.  The level of competition, whether Undergraduate, Masters, or Ph.D. is determined by the student’s status at the time the paper was prepared.  However, any submitted paper must have been prepared and written within ONE YEAR immediately preceding the date of the Annual AAG Meeting.
  6. THEME.  The paper must focus on a water or water resources theme that is clearly related to the discipline of Geography.  The paper must describe work completed by the student (i.e. not a research proposal) for which the student is the sole or principal author.  In the case of multiple student authors, only the principal author is eligible for an award.
  7. FORMAT.  The paper, including illustrations and references, must NOT EXCEED 15 typed/printed pages, using double spacing on standard 8½ by 11 inch paper.  A ‘standard’ script style (e.g., Times New Roman) must be used with a font size no smaller than 12 points.  All information must be properly referenced, with references listed alphabetically as “References Cited” at the end of the paper.  Full sources for figures and tables must also be provided.  An Abstract is required.  The abstract must not exceed 250 words and should be placed at the beginning of the paper, immediately following the title and author’s name and just before the main text.  The abstract may be single-spaced.
  8. COVER LETTER.   A cover letter from the student must accompany the submitted paper.  The letter must clearly state that the paper is being submitted for the Student Paper Competition of the Water Resources Specialty Group.  The cover letter must include the author’s full name, address, day and evening phone numbers, e-mail address, college or university where the student is enrolled, the department of the “major” and whether the paper is being submitted at the Undergraduate, Masters, or Ph.D. level.
  9. LETTER OF ENDORSEMENT.  A letter of endorsement must accompany the submitted paper and cover letter.  A faculty member who is a current, paid-up AAG member, who has read the paper and supports its submission for competition, must write this letter.  The endorsement letter must clearly state that the individual submitting the paper is indeed a student, must confirm the level of submission (Undergraduate, Masters, Ph.D.) and must confirm that the paper was prepared and presented within one year preceding the AAG meeting.
  10. PUBLISHED PAPERS.  Papers submitted for this competition may have been previously submitted for publication in a professional level, peer reviewed journal.  HOWEVER, the paper must have been presented at either an Annual or Divisional AAG meeting within one year of the date of the Annual AAG meeting in Las Vegas.  Furthermore, the award applicant must be the first author of the paper and a student at the time of the paper presentation.  Professional level, peer reviewed articles may be submitted as clear photocopies or offprints and would necessarily be in the journal’s own format rather than in the format defined in these guidelines.  However, papers submitted following a journal format must still be no more than 15 pages long.
  11. SUBMISSION PROCESS.  Three (3) hard copies of the paper or one (1) complete electronic copy of the paper must be submitted. Papers may be submitted on disc or via email, as long as the quality of the text and figures is maintained.  Clear black and white copies of any color figures are acceptable so long as at least one set of any full color figures is included.
  12. QUESTIONS.  For questions regarding the Student Paper Competition please contact Dr. Charles E. Button, WRSG Awards Chair, via email at buttonche@mail.ccsu.edu.
  13. Submit all materials to:  Dr. Charles E. Button, WRSG Awards Chair. Mailing address: Department of Geography, Central Connecticut State University, P.O. Box 4010, New Britain, CT 06050-4010; E-mail: buttonche@mail.ccsu.edu.
