A. Course Description
This course is designed to acquaint the student with physical activity and games from different countries. Students will be exposed to the nature of physical activity and an exploration of games from different countries. Students will broaden their cultural horizons and gain a better appreciation for physical activity as it is conducted by diverse cultures.
B. Course Objectives
1. The student will be able to demonstrate the skills needed to enrich the quality
of life through physical activities that will enhance cultural awareness.
2. The student will be able to demonstrate the skills needed to enrich the quality
of life through physical activities that will promote lifetime fitness.
3. The student will be able to design and implement a unique physical activity or
game from a foreign country.
C. Course outline
Week # 1: Introduction to class, explanation of syllabus, expectations of students, and evaluative criteria for class will be discussed. During the second class, students will participate in Ace, King, Queen, or Jack from the country of Ireland.
Week #2: Two activities: Four Goals Soccer from Peru and Finnish Baseball
Week #3: Two activities: African Bolo Ball and Try Harder Handball from Greece
Week #4: Two activities: Checkmate Handball from China and Fantastic Fistball from Germany
Week #5: Kickboard Water Polo from England and a student-lead activity.
Week #6 and #7: Student-lead activities
D. Course Textbooks
No textbook required. Instructor will provide handouts.
E. Evaluation
FIT activities are graded “pass” or “fail.” In order to pass, a student must:
1. Attend all classes. Two absences will be allowed.
2. Design a game or activity from a foreign country and submit for review.
3. Pass a comprehensive written exam on material presented during the course.
Note: All students requesting reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 shall provide the instructor with proper documentation in accordance with these federal laws and university policy. Reasonable accommodations will be made accordingly.
All activities will be modified to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities depending upon the nature and severity of the disability.
