A.     Course Description

This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental skills, strategies, and rules associated with the game of badminton. Skills emphasized will be the serve, clear, drop, drive, smash, and net shot. Execution of skills will involve both forehand and backhand strokes. Rules and strategies associated with the game of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles will be explained

B.     Course Objectives

1.      The student will be able to identify the lines of and areas of the court and demonstrate that knowledge during competitive play.

2.      The student will understand the rules, strategies, and scoring pertinent to the game of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles play.

3.      The student will recognize differences in holding the racquet in order to execute various shots (E.g. forehand, backhand, smash, drive, etc.).

4.      The student will recognize and differentiate the “flights” of the shuttlecock.

5.      The student will recognize and execute the basic skill of the game in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles play.

b.      Clears – overhead, underhand, and offensive

D.    Class Policies

Each student is permitted two (2) absences. A student taking more than 2 absences will fail the class.

 

Each student is responsible for information missed during his or her absence.

Each student is responsible for wearing appropriate attire for physical activity.

F. Course Evaluation

 

1.      Participation: each student is allowed two absences. More than two, excused or not, will result in failure.

2.      Skills:  Students will be evaluated on their knowledge of the rules and their ability to perform the various shots discussed in class (E.g. the overhead and underhand clear, the overhead and underhand drop, the smash, and the serve). Students must receive a passing grade on their knowledge of skills in order to receive a passing grade.

3.      This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
