The Water Gap Brass

Patrick Dorian (front row right), trumpet/flugelhorn: BM, Ithaca College; MM, Northwestern University. Patrick has studied trumpet with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and is Associate Professor of Music at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught since 1987. He is a member of the trumpet section of the David Liebman Big Band under the direction of Gunnar Mossblad. They recently performed in New York City 's well-known jazz clubs Birdland and the Knitting Factory. A recording of the ensemble at Birdland was produced to be streamed over Internet on the Global Music Network (GMN) site. They also presented a concert at the 28th Annual International Association of Jazz Educators International Conference at the New York Hilton for a capacity crowd from around the world. Additional important recent performances included the Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, PA, and East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania's "Celebration 2000," Week. In July 1998, he performed at several major international jazz festivals on the 23-day tour of eight European countries as a member of the Phil Woods Big Band. He has performed with several well-known entertainers including the Temptations, Frankie Valli, and Al Martino. His recent publications include Transcribing a Solo Using a Tape Constructed from a Compact Disc Player with A/B Repeat Function in the Annual Review of Jazz Studies 8, published in hardcover edition by Scarecrow Press and the Institute of Jazz Studies and 7 pages of liner notes for the enclosure booklet with Urbie Green's CD Sea Jam Blues on Chiaroscuro Records (Chiaroscuro CR[D]338). The liner notes were reviewed as "excellent" in the Jazz Journal International in London, England. Patrick has been on the Board of Directors of the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts (COTA) and was the 1990 recipient of the Fred Waring Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts and the community. From its inception in 1981 until 2000 he taught and directed the COTA Cats student jazz ensemble along with Phil Woods, the founder of the group. He can be heard on the CD Jazzmass: A Celebration of the Spirit in Delaware Water Gap on Pacific Street Records (PSR 0019).
