Introductory Biology I course description

Introductory Biology I is a comprehensive course in biology which covers basic concepts in classical and modern biological thought. Topics focus on the central principles of structure and function of the cell, metabolism, genetics, protein synthesis, and concepts of evolution and ecology.

About me

leaf epidermisI am a plant ecologist (more specifically a palynologist) by training but I always wanted to be a teacher at a small school like ESU. I love teaching. I was broadly trained in biology and in my nearly thirty years at ESU I have taught a great variety of course including environmental courses, Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Aquatic Ecology, Organic Evolution, Microbiology and others. I take care of the ESU greenhouse. My research interests range widely within the field of plant biology. I have a special interest in aquatic plants but also in a tropical plant family, the Gesneriaceae. Dr. John Leiser of Northampton Community College and I have an ongoing native plant community restoration project on McMichaels Creek. Two students are working with me on surveys of a rare moss and a rare cliffside plant in northeastern PA. By the way the picture at the left is of a leaf surface with hairs taken with an electron microscope.
