CPSC 100  PCs and Their Uses     HW#1  WT: 3%    Summer 2001 NAME_________________

1. (50 pts) True or False. Circle T or F as appropriate. If any part of the statement is false the entire statement is false.

T             F              Software is temporary output such as on the screen.

T             F              The decimal number system is used inside the computer because the
                                electronic circuits are two-state devices.

T             F              Several Input Devices commonly used on PCs are the Mouse, Keyboard and
                                Modem.

T             F              Several Output Devices used on PCs are Monitors and CD ROMS.

T             F              Source Data Automation is the collection of data automatically at the source
to reduce human involvement and thus reduce human errors.

T             F              An Operating System is part of the system software that makes it possible
for a user to run their application software.

T             F              Main Memory RAM in a computer is Volatile.

T             F              The letter automatically assigned to the Hard Drive on an IBM compatible computer
                                is  A.

T             F              A Megabyte(MEG) is approximately one million bytes.

T             F              A bit consists of 8 bytes and is commonly used to store one character of data.

T             F              A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.

T             F              ALU is a common character coding scheme used on computers today.

T             F              The processing speed of a computer depends not only on the type
chip(Pentium,Pentium III) but also on  the clock speed of the chip(in MegaHertz)

T             F              A common Secondary Storage device used on computers today is a hard magnetic disk.

T             F              If I want to permanently store some data then I must put it on a floppy
disk as the built in Hard Drive can only store data temporarily.

T             F              The Internet is a LAN.

T             F              If I only have one floppy drive and a built in hard drive I cannot transfer
a file on one floppy disk to another floppy disk as I need a computer with two floppy
                                 drives to do that.

T             F              An IBM Compatible computer means it was manufactured by the IBM corporation.

T             F              Windows 2000 or Windows 98 are examples of system software.

T             F              Bar Code Readers like those found at super markets are magnetic input type
                                devices.

T             F              In buying a new PC you should first decide what type of applications you are
going to be using on the computer.

T             F              Most printers in use today are non-impact printers since they have better quality
                                output than impact printers.

T             F              Hard Copy output is on some type of temporary media while Soft Copy output is
                                on a permanent media.

T             F              A floppy disk is a volatile storage medium as it can be removed from the computer.

7. (4 pts) Even though I have all the main memory RAM that I could ever use and enough to hold all the applications software and data that I need, why would I still need some type of secondary storage such as a hard drive or floppy disk?

8. (4 pts) I have just completed my program number one assignment and have it stored in my mcdonald directory on my floppy disk but the name of the file is pamphlet.doc. I just read the requirement again and it says it should be stored in a file called prog1.doc.
