Terminology: Read through
the relevant portions of the 2 text books… look up any words used in
the texts, or in notes that you don’t know. Most terminology will
be defined in the book, but don’t forget the power of Google. Be
wary of Wikipedia: if using net references or definitions, be
sure to check the expertise of the contributor. If you can't find
an author and year, be very skeptical.
Concept Questions
1) If you were on the first mission to an earth-like planet in Alpha
Centauri, what criteria would you use to decide if something was alive?
2) How are plants and animal cells the same? Different? Be
able to list the organelles and their functions.
3) Describe the structure and function of a plasma membrane.
4) What is the mnemonic for the elements needed by plants. What
elements are needed?
5) Describe how water is unique as a compound.
6) What are the 4 basic classes of biological molecules: give examples
and how they are used?
7) Distinguish between unitary and modular organisms. Give
examples.
8) Using a 6 Kingdom classification scheme, distinguish between each
kingdom, and give examples. Include ecosystems in which they
might be found and their trophic role.
9) Describe the typical Pocono winter conditions.
10) What conditions must trees and other vegetation be able to cope
with in winter? Describe their adaptations to winter.
11) How are birds adapted for winter?
12) How are white-tailed deer adapted for winter? Rabbits?
13) Describe the abiotic characteristics of the Poconos. Major
habitat types? Soils?
14) What flora would you expect in each of the following
communities? Mixed oak forest, Pocono scrub-oak barrens,
Tannersville Cranberry bog
15) Why are wetlands and bogs in particular important ecosystems to
protect?
16) How do bogs develop?
