Oral Report Guidelines

Report Selection:

Journal Article - From a recent (2000or later) ACS (American Chemical Society) journal you will select an article or communication to investigate and present the material in an 6 minute oral presentation.  You must use computer generated multimedia (i.e.. power point or corel presents, html etc.) for the presentation.

You must bring the selected article (with a second and possibly third choice) article to an individual meeting held the first week of the presentation schedule.  You will receive a scheduled individual meeting time via email.  Meetings will occur during the regular laboratory period, so time conflicts will not be a problem. Have the articles thoroughly read and a brief proposal for what you would like to present from each paper outlined for our meeting. If you are unprepared 15 points will be deducted from your presentation score and you will receive a score of 0 for the exercise.  At this meeting we will choose the article and focus of your presentation.  In choosing the article take care to choose a scope which can be adequately covered in 6 minutes. As always, concentrate primarily on theory and application of results to theory. Your presentation may include  the chalkboard, handouts etc. in addition to multi-media.  Since you only have 6 minutes you will not be able to present an entire long paper.  For in depth articles you will probably chose a section to discuss.  For shorter papers or communications you may be able to summarize the entire paper.

Biochemistry, The Journal of Organic Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry and The Journal of the American Chemical Society are excellent sources for articles.  Others are available.

Your grade will be based on the following:

Points                    Category
