Responsibilities and Directions for Making Shadow Plots

[1] If you signed up to make one of the "Specific Time" shadow plot measurements (indicated by the presence of 8:00 AM, or some other specific time), then follow the directions immediately below.  If you signed up to make one of the "Weekly" shadow plot measurements, then skip to part [2].

Specific Time measurements: Simply take the shadow board outside at your assigned time, well away from any buildings or metal objects, and orient it so that the red compass needle aligns with the black North arrow.  Note the position of the shadow cast by the vertical screw, and place a dot on the paper to indicate the position of the head of the shadow.  Next to this dot, write the observation time and your initials.

[2] Weekly measurements: Sometime during the week you have signed up for, but preferably near the beginning of the week, take the shadow board outside at  around 11:55 AM.  Align the board using the compass as indicated above, and place a dot to indicate the position of the head of the shadow cast by the vertical screw.  Keep track of the head of the shadow, and note its position at noon.  After you have marked its noontime position, use a ruler to measure the distance between the center of your noontime dot and the center of the hole where the nail enters the board.  Record this distance, along with the date that you made the measurement, and either bring them to class and tell John, or email him the information.

Note:  You will obviously not be able to make your measurement on a cloudy day so, if you can't get a good shadow, try again the next day.  You need only make your measurement sometime during your assigned week.
