| Physics IV [Phys 262] Objectives and Homework for October 20, 2005. [1] Understand how to combine two different angular momenta to get an overall angular momentum. Understand the relevance of such coupling to the properties of atoms and nuclei. [2] Understand spectroscopic notation. [3] Understand the spin properties and statistics of bosons and fermions. Be able to give examples of phenomena that illustrate the statistics properties of various particles. [4] Know the transition rules obeyed by atoms when they emit or absorb a photon, and understand their origin. [5] Understand the general structure of the periodic table, and be able to predict electron configurations for any given element. Be able to predict key properties of any element based on electron configuration. Homework due Tuesday, October 25, 2005. [1] Finish reading Chapter 8 in Thornton & Rex. [2] Do Problems 10, 12, 14, 19, and 31 at the end of Chapter 8 (pp. 270-271) in Thornton & Rex. |
