Physics IV [Phys 262]
Objectives and Homework for October 4, 2005.

[1] Be able to calculate transmission and reflection coefficients from simple step potentials.

[2] Know what is meant by “Separation of Variables”, and understand how this technique is used to solve the Time-Independent Schrodinger Equation for the Hydrogen atom.

[3] Know how the properties of the energy eigenstates of the Hydrogen atom depend on their quantum numbers.  Know the restrictions placed on the values of these quantum numbers.

[4] Understand the normal Zeeman Effect, and be able to explain how it arises.

Homework due Friday, October 7, 2005.

[1] Read Chapter 7 in Thornton & Rex.

[2] Do Problems 2, 6, 18, 21, 25, and 32 at the end of Chapter 7 (pp. 247-248) in Thornton & Rex.
