| Physics IV [Phys 262] Objectives and Homework for September 30, 2005. [1] Know the results of the Double Slit Experiment, both at moderate intensities and at low intensities. Be able to explain what these results imply. [2] Understand the results when the Schrodinger Equation is applied to the infinite square well, finite square well, and harmonic oscillator potentials in arbitrary dimensions. [3] Understand what is meant by the term Tunneling, and be able to explain why it is allowed quantum mechanically even though it is not allowed classically. [4] Be able to sketch wavefunctions qualitatively given sufficient information about the potential and the energy of the state that the wavefunction represents. [5] Be able to calculate transmission and reflection coefficients from simple step potentials. Homework due Tuesday, October 4, 2005. [1] Finish Reading Chapter 6 in Thornton & Rex. [2] Do Problems 23, 24, 30, 34, 38, and 39 at the end of Chapter 6 (pp. 219-220) in Thornton & Rex. |
