Assignment #6 Reading, Vocabulary & Objectives
A. Availability and Due Dates
Assignment #6 is available Tuesday, March 22, 2005. The target date for its successful completion is Tuesday, March 29, 2005. In any event, all Mandatory Homework problems from Assignment #6 must be successfully completed and turned in by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2005. B. Reading
As preparation for completing the problems in Assignment #6, read Chapter 10 in Knight. |
C. Vocabulary
As part of Assignment #6, the following vocabulary words must be understood and memorized: |
Kinetic Energy, Gravitational Potential Energy, Mechanical Energy, Elastic Potential Energy, Total Energy, Hooke's Law, Spring Constant (or Elastic Constant), Elastic Collision, Equilibrium Position, Stable Equilibrium, Unstable Equilibrium, Neutral Equilibrium. |
D. Objectives
In addition to the Objectives listed on Assignments #1- #5, after completing Assignment #6, the student should
Know the definitions of those quantities listed in the vocabulary section above. |
Know the SI units in which all of the dimensionful quantities in the vocabulary section above are measured. |
Understand the concepts behind and the definitions of kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy, and elastic potential energy. Further, the student should be able to use the conservation of mechanical energy to solve arbitrary questions pertaining to systems in which these are the only types of energy present. |
Understand what is meant a Hookian restoring force or linear restoring force. Be able to provide examples of systems in which you would find such a force. |
