Physics for the Inquiring Mind (PHYS 105)                   Spring 2005
Exercises for Tuesday, February 8.

[1] For the next four weeks, we'll be working with electric circuits.  The circuits groups will be as follows:

Cherry Garcia: Burke, Castellano, Gress, Laird, McClure
Chubby Hubby: Cook, Hahnebach, Lilge, McArthur, Rutt
Phish Food: Amerman, Cortese, Fricke, Kincaid, Myers
Chunky Monkey: Arminio, Barnes, Barrish, Hoyt
From Russia With Buzz: Berger, Lowery, Melrath, Stancick, Virus
Karmel Sutra: Birth, Fretz, Merline, Miller, Wilson

[2] Get into you new groups, and then send a group member up to get a kit.

[3] Using your battery pack, bulb, wires, and a piece of aluminum, figure out whether electrical current passes through aluminum easily.  If you wish to test the flow of electrical current through the aluminum, make sure that you design a circuit that forces the current to pass through the aluminum.  If current passes easily through some substance, we call that substance a “good conductor”, or simply a “conductor”.

[4] Determine whether wood is a good conductor.

[5] Determine whether plastic is a good conductor.

[6] Determine whether water is a good conductor.

[7] Complete Experiment 1.11 on p. 386 of McDermott.

[8] Read pp. 387-388 on Circuit Diagrams.

[9] Complete Experiment 2.4 on p. 393.

[10] If time permits, complete Experiment 2.6 on p. 395.

[11] As Homework for Friday, February 11, do Exercise 1.12 (p. 388) and Exercise 2.2 (p. 391) in McDermott.
