[1] Be able to explain why atoms have "characteristic X-ray" spectra, and know the difference between the Ká , Kâ , Lá , etc. X-ray lines. [2] Understand the results and implications of the Franck-Hertz experiment. [3] Know the DeBroglie wave relation, and know why DeBroglie was motivated to propose it. [4] Be able to explain how Davisson & Germer confirmed DeBroglie's hypothesis. [5] Understand the mathematics of waves. [6] Understand what is meant by a wavepacket, and understand how wavepackets necessarily lead to uncertainty relations. [7] Understand what a Fourier Transform is. [8] Understand the concepts "dispersive medium", "phase velocity", and "group velocity". Homework due Tuesday, September 28, 2004. [1] Read through to the end of Section 5.5 in Thornton & Rex.
