Assignment #6 Reading, Vocabulary & Objectives

A. Availability and Due Dates

Assignment #6 is available Monday, March 15, 2004.  The target date for its successful completion is Monday, March 22, 2004.  In any event, all problems from Assignment #6 must be successfully completed and turned in by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 24, 2004.  If this requirement is not met, the student will not be allowed to take Exam 3, to be given in class on Friday, March 26, 2004.  

B. Reading

As preparation for completing the problems in Assignment #6, read Chapter 8 in Serway & Jewett.

C. Vocabulary

As part of Assignment #6, the following vocabulary words must be understood and memorized in addition to those already listed on Assignments 1-5:
    
Stable Equilibrium, Unstable Equilibrium, Neutral Equilibrium, Elastic Collision, Inelastic Collision, Gravitational Potential Energy, Rest Mass Potential Energy.

D. Objectives

In addition to the Objectives already listed as part of Assignments 1-5, the student should

Know the definitions of those quantities listed in the vocabulary section above.
Understand that mass is a form of potential energy, and be able to determine the amount of potential energy stored in a given amount of matter.
Be able to explain why the simple physical system of a mass on a spring is arguably the most relevant physical system that one can study if one wants to understand Nature better.
