Assignment #5 Problems


For Exam 3, you will be expected to do problems of difficulty similar to those below without reference to the text or to any notes.  Make sure that you can do this before you move on to the next assignment!

(1) Do Questions 11, 13, and 18 on p. 171 of Serway & Jewett.
(2) Do Problems 2, 5, 9, 19, 32, 39, and 73 on pp. 172-180 of Serway & Jewett.
(3) Do Questions 5, 6, 14, 18, and 20 on p. 209 of Serway & Jewett.
(4) Do Problems 4, 8, 10, 13, 19, 26, and 32 on pp. 209-212 of Serway & Jewett.

(5) Suppose that necklace with a pendant attached is hanging from the rear view mirror of your car.  The mass of the pendant is 50 grams.  You now hit the accelerator, and your car takes off with acceleration 5 m/s2.  Viewed from the reference frame of a passenger within the vehicle, determine the fictitious force acting on the pendant.

(6) A certain Force Field is described by the expression

Does this field represent a Conservative force?  Explain.  

Could a potential energy be defined for this force?  Explain.
