Assignment #1 Problems
Due in class Friday, January 16

[1] Read all of Chapter 1 in Kirkpatrick & Francis.

[2] Do Conceptual Questions 11 and 15 on p. 12 of Kirkpatrick & Francis.

[3] Do Problems 4, 6, and 10 on pp. 12-13 of Kirkpatrick & Francis.  Do Problem 10 without a calculator first, and then use a calculator to check your answer.  If you can't figure out how to do it without a calculator, ask John:  you will need to be able to do this for the first Quiz.

[4] Order of Magnitude Problem:  Estimate the number of ping pong balls required to fill up Gessner 118 completely.  You may assume that the room is empty before the addition of the ping pong balls.

The point behind an order of magnitude problem is to get the answer correct within a factor of 10 without making detailed measurements.  Simply estimate the size of a ping pong ball, estimate the dimensions of Gessner 118, and take it from there.
