Objectives for November 13, 2003.


[1] Understand the mathematics of radioactive decay.

[2] Understand the details of alpha, beta, and gamma decay.

[3] Understand the functioning of a cyclotron.

[4] Know what is meant by the term "neutron activation".

[5] Understand what is meant by the term "resonance", when applied to nuclei and/or particles.

[6] Understand what is meant by a "direct reaction".

[7] Understand the details of the fission process, and be able to describe the necessary components in a fission reactor.

[8] Know what a breeder reactor is, and understand how it functions.

[9] Understand the fusion process in detail, and understand its role in stellar evolution and the formation of the nuclides.

[10] Understand the strategies currently being employed to produce controlled fusion processes here on Earth.
