[1] We will be going up to the Lab [Room 225] today to do our experimentation. You will be working in the following groups: Red Group: Anello, Deery, Stancick, Wruble Yellow Group: Filosa, MacHose, Stilwell, Woolf Blue Group: Doell, Mazzuca, Scimeca, Werkheiser Mauve Group: Baltz, Dury, Finno, Noel Chartreuse Group: Cutter, Frantz, Giranda, Michaels Green Group: Gardowski, Hake, Hardy, Medei When you get up to the lab, group off together and sit near one of the six hot plates in the room. After this, introduce yourself to the other group members, and get contact information (phone and/or email) from all of them. You will be working closely with them over the next 3 weeks or so, and will need to be able to contact them outside of class. [2] Send one of your group members to John to retrieve the following items: 1 150 ml beaker, 1 graduated cylinder, 1 timer, 1 thermometer, graph paper. [3] Start Experiment 1.2 on p. 164 of your text, but note the following changes: Use 60 mls, not 75 mls of water. This will make things go a bit quicker. You need take readings only once per minute, instead of the recommended once every 30 seconds. [4] While your water is heating for Experiment 1.2, read p. 163 of your text and do Experiment 1.1 on p. 163 (but continue to take data for Experiment 1.2!). [5] Read the remainder of p. 164 and all of p. 165. Do part C of Exercise 1.3 on p. 165 in class. You will be asked to do the rest of the exercise for homework (to be turned in on Friday, August 29). To compare your thermometer to another, either borrow an additional one from John, or borrow one from another group. [6] Finish Experiment 1.2 and make the graph. [7] After you have finished Experiment 1.2, turn in all of your group's written work from Experiments 1.1 and 1.2. [8] Homework for Friday, August 29:
You submission needs to include a list of needed equipment, followed by a step by step procedure for determining the temperature asked for. You are free to submit sample procedures and/or equipment requests to me via email at John.Elwood@po-box.esu.edu, but you must come to class on Friday with one procedure for your entire group, and should be ready to implement it. I will have any equipment that you request ready for you! |
