Objectives:

To provide a broad introduction to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The course is appropriate both for nonspecialists who wish to acquire a general understanding of the field, and for students preparing for more advanced courses or research in Artificial Intelligence.

Recommended Background:

Familiarity with first-order logic, basic graph representations and algorithms, complexity and programming.

Topics to be Covered:

Goals of the Artificial Intelligence field; Core topics of AI, including search, knowledge representation, reasoning, planning and learning.

Grading Policy:

·  Homework Assignments: 30 %

·  Midterm Examination: 20 %

·  Final Examination: 30 %

Homework Submission Policy:

All homework answers need to be typed or word-processed. Homework must be turned in by the assigned deadline. Late homework will not be accepted. Rare exceptions may be made by the instructor only under extenuating circumstances and in accordance with the university policies.

Announcements:

Homework 5 has been posted, and it will be due on 12/04/2008.

Academic Honesty and Integrity:

All work submitted is to be completed individually (unless indicated as a group assignment), and is to be the sole product of your own efforts. Group work is to be the sole product of members of the group. Any perception of anything to the contrary or that violates the spirit of the Student Code of Conduct will be handled accordingly. This policy is very specific on what constitutes Academic Misconduct and provides a range of very unpleasant possible outcomes, should a violation be suspected. Attendance Policy:

Regular class attendance is required though class attendance may not be used in the final determination of grades. Students are required to attend class during the regularly scheduled tests and the final exam unless prior arrangements have been made.
