Guided Tour to
Science Education Organizations on the Web

There are many professional societies that deal with science education. For every profession you can name, there is probably (at least) one professional society and science education is no different. These organizations are invaluable, especially for those just starting out. It is highly recommended that you join the appropriate organization.

Unless you are sure that you will only be teaching one subject and, perhaps, one grade level, you should probably check out the National Science Teachers Association. Most states also have their own state chapter affiliated with the national organization (e.g., the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association). These state organizations may have less to offer than the national organizations but they cost much less to join and their conventions are usually easier to get to (the NSTA hosts regional conventions in addition to their national convention but the regional conventions may not be nearby). They are worth checking out, especially since the other participants are more likely to be the ones hiring you!
