Guided Tour to
E-Mail Discussion Lists

In addition to the sites described thus far, there are other ways that teachers interact via the web. One of the ways is an E-mail discussion list. For example, there is a list dedicated to discussions among physics teachers (PHYS-L).

These utilize a program that allows participants to e-mail to several people at once (called the list). By subscribing to the list, you will receive a copy of all the mailings sent to the list (note: you subscribe and unsubscribe by sending a message to the list administrator, not the list itself). Adding and deleting your name to the list is relatively simple, but each list may have its own rules. I recommend that you subscribe to one for a while before posting any messages, just to make sure your mailing is appropriate.

A good discussion of these lists, as well as a rather complete list of educational lists, is provided by EdWeb's E-Mail Discussion Lists and Electronic Journals. A good list of science-related lists is provided by IMSE's Selected Science Listserv Sites (IMSE stands for Instructional Materials in Science Education). For a complete list of all possible discussion lists, check out Tile.Net.
