• Icons in File Manager:

There are three major types of object icons in the file manager. The first is the file icon, which represents a file. The second is the folder icon, which represents a folder. Folders are objects that contain files and folder icons. They are useful for grouping related files (and folders) together. The third type of icon is the device icon. Device icons represent the hardware of the computer. Its actual drives contain the folders and files.

• File Icons:
• File icons may appear different depending on the type of files they represent.
• All files have a white background and the upper right corner is folded over.
• File icons that have blue lines represent files that File Manager associates with applications. File Manager, for example, associates files that have
  • .BMP extensions with the Paintbrush drawing program
  • .DOC extensions with the Word for Windows Word Processing program.
  • .MDB extensions with the Access database manager.
  • .PPT extensions with the PowerPoint slide preparation program.
  • .TXT extensions with the Notepad text editing program.
  • .XLS extensions with the Excel spreadsheet program.
  Double-clicking on an icon with blue lines runs the file's associated application. Double-clicking on a file named ESSAY.DOC, for example, starts Word for Windows, and reads ESSAY.DOC into Word's workspace.

• Folder Icons:
• These are the yellow icons in the left and the right sides of the above illustration.
• Folders are also called directories or sub-directories.
• Imagine these folders as you would a folder in a filing cabinet that could hold papers(files) and other folders(sub-directories).

• Devices:
• Devices can be thought of as filing cabinets that store folders and files.
• The icon with the letter "a" next to it represents a floppy or removable disc drive.
• The icon with the letter "c" next to it represents a hard or non-removable disc drive.
• The icon with the letter "e" next to it represents a networked drive. A networked drive is a drive that is not physically part of the local PC. Networked drives are on other machines that are connected to the computer with network cables. Think of a networked drive as a shared filing cabinet in another room, possibly in another building. When you access a networked drive, the network "runs" to the other room to get your file.
