Windows on top of windows

Introduction:
These are windows stacked on top of another window(s). They occur when you are working with multiple windows at the same time and do not adjust the windows to share the screen. Here is an example of windows stacked on top of one another:

Why Windows on Top of Windows:
The concept of dealing with windows stacked on top of windows can be frustrating and confusing. The most frustrating and confusing aspect is keeping track of what windows are open. Since the windows underneath the visible one cannot be seen, you might forget that they are there. This tendency to forget leads to the same applications opened a multiple number of times. When this happens separate instances of the program may conflict.

How to Tell How Many Windows are Open at Once:
There is a couple of ways to tell how many windows you have opened at once:

  1. You can iconify or minimize all the windows you have opened. Once you have iconified all the windows, you can see how many copies of each application are open.

  2. Another way to tell how many windows are opened is to use "ALT + TAB" command to cycle through the active applications. This method, however, is more difficult since you have to keep track of active applications as you cycle through them.
