Teaching Improvement Plan
Evaluate your own current teaching strengths and weaknesses, and write a self-improvement plan for turning a selected weakness into a strength.
Begin by assessing your own current teaching strengths and weaknesses. Brainstorm a listing of your strengths as a teacher and your weaknesses as a teacher. Don’t be shy about revealing what you do well and how you feel you have been effective as a teacher. Peer hard at yourself in terms of the areas you know are not your best, the times when you are less than satisfied, the self-criticisms you have. Then choose what you decide is your area of greatest weakness or where you believe improvement would have the greatest impact on your ability as a teacher.
The weakest area identified will be selected as a target for a self-improvement plan for turning the weakness into a strength (or at least great improvement). Describe this area in detail, telling how and why you chose it, what you do now in this area, and what you want to be able to do in this area. Develop a plan of how you could go about developing this area, including steps which involve identifying alternatives, resources, and procedures which would improve your teaching. Be very specific in terms of direct actions you could take, specific people and resources you could consult, ways to reinforce and measure your improvement, and concrete goals.
Implementation of this plan, although highly encouraged, is really at your discretion. This self-improvement plan activity is designed to: (1) strengthen reflective teaching skills to assist you in becoming a better teacher, and (2) develop the supervisory skills needed in helping beginning or student teachers with the benefit of reflective teaching.
This document can be in outline form. Please limit your description of your plan to 1 to 2 pages.
