chapter 5

Vocabulary
Apparent Weight, Apparent Weightlessness, Coefficient of Kinetic Friction, Coefficient of Rolling Friction, Coefficient of Static Friction, Terminal Speed, Terminal Velocity, Weightlessness.
Objectives. At this point in the course, the student should
  1. Become as comfortable as possible with applying Newton's Laws to one-dimensional physical situations.
  2. Be able to determine the drag due to air resistance acting on objects of moderate size that are traveling at moderate speeds through the lower atmosphere.
  3. Understand the simple empirical relationship describing how many frictional forces behave. The student must also be able to distinguish between static and kinetic frictional forces, and must be able to apply this knowledge in both static and dynamic situations. Further, the student should be able to give a description of the microscopic processes and forces responsible for producing this empirical relationship.
